Put your phone, tablet or laptop next to the board and it becomes a tournament-style chess clock for over-the-board games. This chess clock online runs in any modern browser, so there is nothing to download and no account to create. Pick a time control and play; nothing gets in the way while the clock is running.
Chess clock presets: bullet, blitz, rapid and classical
Every preset starts with one tap. Bullet and blitz turn it into a speed chess timer, from a 1-minute game up to a 10-minute chess timer; rapid and classical give each player time to think. The Open link in each row is also a share link: copy it and send your club the exact clock you play with.
3+2 is the time control of the FIDE World Blitz Championship, and 15+10 that of the World Rapid. Where FIDE draws the line between blitz, rapid and classical is explained in Chess time controls explained.

Increment and delay
Fischer increment, Bronstein delay and simple US delay, plus multi-stage controls like 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 more. For Go, byo-yomi and Canadian overtime.
Screen stays awake
While the clock runs, your screen won’t dim or lock in browsers that support it.
Survives a reload
If the page reloads or the tab closes by mistake, open it again and continue the game where it stopped.
Two players, one screen
Face to face on a phone, with each player’s time turned toward them, or side by side on a tablet. Big tap areas, and on a laptop each player has a key: Left Shift and Right Shift.
Pause, undo and adjust
Pause at any time. From the pause screen you can undo a mistaken tap or add and remove time, 10 seconds or a minute at a time.
Handicap and Armageddon
Give a weaker player more time with a different base time for each side, or settle a match with Armageddon: White 5:00, Black 4:00.
How to use this chess timer in 3 steps
- Pick a time control
Tap a preset like 5+3 or 10+0, or choose Custom to set your own base time, increment or delay.
- Start the clock
Put the screen beside the board. Black taps first, which starts White’s clock.
- Tap after every move

Chess timer FAQ
How do I set a 10-minute or 3+2 chess timer?
Tap the 10+0 or 3+2 preset and the clock is ready: 10 minutes each with no increment, or 3 minutes each plus 2 seconds per move. For a time control that isn’t a preset, such as 10+5, choose Custom and set the base time and increment. Every preset in the table above also has an Open link you can share.
Which increment and delay options are there?
Fischer increment adds time after every move, Bronstein delay gives back the time you used up to a limit, and simple (US) delay waits a few seconds before your clock starts counting down. Under Custom you can also set multi-stage controls such as 90/40 + 30, and byo-yomi or Canadian overtime. How increment and delay differ is explained in Increment vs delay.
Is this chess timer free? Do I need an app?
It is free, and there is nothing to download and no account to create. Open this page in the browser on your phone, tablet or laptop and the clock is ready, just like a chess clock app.
Does it warn me when time is low?
Yes. In the settings you can turn on a low-time warning at 10 or 30 seconds and a tap sound for every move; on Android phones each tap can also vibrate. Turn on tenths and the clock shows them under 20 seconds, such as 0:17.4.
What happens when a player runs out of time?
The clock stops and shows whose time ran out. A summary follows with the number of moves, the game time, the longest think and the time for every move, and you can start a rematch or swap colors. Whether running out of time loses the game depends on the position: see the rules of the chess clock. FIDE and US Chess also differ on who may call a fallen flag and what material can still win on time, compared in FIDE vs US Chess clock rules.
Can I use it for other board games?
Yes, for any game with two players who take turns: the clock only counts time. For Go, set byo-yomi or Canadian overtime under Custom. The Chinese version of the site has ready-made presets for Go and Chinese chess (xiangqi).
